Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1The LORD said to Moses, |
"Speak to the sons of Israel, and get from them a rod for each father's household: twelve rods, from all their leaders according to their fathers' households. You shall write each name on his rod, | 2"Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff. |
and write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi; for there is one rod for the head of each of their fathers' households. | 3On the staff of Levi write Aaron's name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. |
"You shall then deposit them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony, where I meet with you. | 4Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you. |
"It will come about that the rod of the man whom I choose will sprout. Thus I will lessen from upon Myself the grumblings of the sons of Israel, who are grumbling against you." | 5The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites." |
Moses therefore spoke to the sons of Israel, and all their leaders gave him a rod apiece, for each leader according to their fathers' households, twelve rods, with the rod of Aaron among their rods. | 6So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron's staff was among them. |
So Moses deposited the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony. | 7Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the covenant law. |
Now on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. | 8The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron's staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. |
Moses then brought out all the rods from the presence of the LORD to all the sons of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his rod. | 9Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the LORD's presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff. |
But the LORD said to Moses, "Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony to be kept as a sign against the rebels, that you may put an end to their grumblings against Me, so that they will not die." | 10The LORD said to Moses, "Put back Aaron's staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die." |
Thus Moses did; just as the LORD had commanded him, so he did. | 11Moses did just as the LORD commanded him. |
Then the sons of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, "Behold, we perish, we are dying, we are all dying! | 12The Israelites said to Moses, "We will die! We are lost, we are all lost! |
"Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the LORD, must die. Are we to perish completely?" | 13Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD will die. Are we all going to die?" |
