New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; | 1Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; | 2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. |
and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. | 3This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. |
And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was. | 4And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. |
So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"; | 5In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father." |
just as He says also in another passage, "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK." | 6And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." |
In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. | 7During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. |
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. | 8Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered |
And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, | 9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him |
being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. | 10and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. |
Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. | 11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. |
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. | 12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! |
For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. | 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. |
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. | 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. |
