For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence."1For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm. I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence."
I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good, And my sorrow grew worse.2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:"
"LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.4 LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am.
"Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.5You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah "
"Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.6Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
"And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.7Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
"Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach of the foolish.8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
"I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
"Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am perishing.10Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand.
"With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. Selah.11You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor. Selah "
"Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner like all my fathers.12Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers.
"Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again Before I depart and am no more."13Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone."
