New American Standard Bible 1995 | English Standard Version |
Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? | 1Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? |
In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. | 2In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. |
For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, And the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD. | 3For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. |
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God." | 4In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” |
His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are on high, out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them. | 5His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. |
He says to himself, "I will not be moved; Throughout all generations I will not be in adversity." | 6He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” |
His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness. | 7His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. |
He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the hiding places he kills the innocent; His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate. | 8He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; |
He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair; He lurks to catch the afflicted; He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net. | 9he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. |
He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones. | 10The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. |
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it." | 11He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” |
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. | 12Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. |
Why has the wicked spurned God? He has said to himself, "You will not require it." | 13Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? |
You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. | 14But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. |
Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer, Seek out his wickedness until You find none. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. |
The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. |
O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear | 17O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear |
To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. | 18to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. |
