King James Bible | English Standard Version |
Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? | 1Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? |
The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined. | 2In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. |
For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth. | 3For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. |
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. | 4In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” |
His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. | 5His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. |
He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. | 6He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” |
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. | 7His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. |
He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. | 8He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; |
He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. | 9he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. |
He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. | 10The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. |
He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it. | 11He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” |
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble. | 12Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. |
Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. | 13Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? |
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. | 14But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. |
Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. |
The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. |
LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: | 17O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear |
To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. | 18to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. |
