1The LORD told Moses, | 1Then the LORD said to Moses, |
2"Issue these orders to the Israelis: 'You're about to enter the land of Canaan. This territory has been apportioned to you as your inheritance: the entire land of Canaan, all the way to its borders.'" | 2“Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your special possession, these will be the boundaries. |
3"'To your south is the Wilderness of Zin, bordering Edom. Your southern border is to extend east toward the far end of the Dead Sea, | 3The southern portion of your country will extend from the wilderness of Zin, along the edge of Edom. The southern boundary will begin on the east at the Dead Sea. |
4then it is to turn southward to the ascent of Akrabbim, cross Zin, and then run south of Kadesh-barnea and proceed from there to Hazar-addar and across to Azmon. | 4It will then run south past Scorpion Pass in the direction of Zin. Its southernmost point will be Kadesh-barnea, from which it will go to Hazar-addar, and on to Azmon. |
5Then the border is to turn from Azmon toward the wadi of Egypt and from there to the Mediterranean Sea.'" | 5From Azmon the boundary will turn toward the Brook of Egypt and end at the Mediterranean Sea. |
6"'The western border is to be the Mediterranean Sea. This is to be the western border.'" | 6“Your western boundary will be the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. |
7"'Your northern border is to extend from the Mediterranean Sea to Mount Hor. | 7“Your northern boundary will begin at the Mediterranean Sea and run east to Mount Hor, |
8From Mount Hor, you are to mark out the entrance to Hammath, with the border running through Zedad, | 8then to Lebo-hamath, and on through Zedad |
9then through Ziphron, and then to Hazar-enan. This is to be the northern border.'" | 9and Ziphron to Hazar-enan. This will be your northern boundary. |
10"'You are to mark the border on the east from Hazar-enan to Shepham. | 10“The eastern boundary will start at Hazar-enan and run south to Shepham, |
11The border is then to extend from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain, then to the Sea of Chinnereth on the east. | 11then down to Riblah on the east side of Ain. From there the boundary will run down along the eastern edge of the Sea of Galilee, |
12The border is to continue along the Jordan River all the way to the Dead Sea. This is to be your land, as measured by its boundaries.'" | 12and then along the Jordan River to the Dead Sea. These are the boundaries of your land.” |
13Moses commanded the Israelis, "You are to inherit this land by lot, just as the LORD commanded to give it to the remaining nine and a half tribes. | 13Then Moses told the Israelites, “This territory is the homeland you are to divide among yourselves by sacred lot. The LORD has commanded that the land be divided among the nine and a half remaining tribes. |
14The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, as defined by their ancestral houses, have received their inheritance. | 14The families of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their grants of land |
15These two and a half tribes received their inheritance this side of the Jordan River, east of Jericho, facing the rising sun." | 15on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho toward the sunrise.” Leaders to Divide the Land |
16Then the LORD told Moses, | 16And the LORD said to Moses, |
17"These are the names of the men who are to divide the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua. | 17“Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun are the men designated to divide the grants of land among the people. |
18You are to appoint a leader from each tribe to divide the land for inheritance. | 18Enlist one leader from each tribe to help them with the task. |
19These are the names of the men: Appoint Jephunneh's son Caleb from the tribe of Judah, | 19These are the tribes and the names of the leaders: Tribe Leader Judah Caleb son of Jephunneh |
20Ammihud's son Shemuel from the tribe of Simeon, | 20Simeon Shemuel son of Ammihud |
21Chislon's son Elidad from the tribe of Benjamin, | 21Benjamin Elidad son of Kislon |
22and Jogli's son Bukki is to be leader of the tribe of Dan. | 22Dan Bukki son of Jogli |
23From the tribe of Joseph, you are to appoint Ephod's son Hanniel to be leader of the half tribe of Manasseh, | 23Manasseh son of Joseph Hanniel son of Ephod |
24Shiphtan's son Kemuel to be leader of the half tribe of Ephraim, | 24Ephraim son of Joseph Kemuel son of Shiphtan |
25Parnach's son Elizaphan to be leader of the tribe of Zebulun, | 25Zebulun Elizaphan son of Parnach |
26Azzan's son Paltiel to be leader of the tribe of Issachar, | 26Issachar Paltiel son of Azzan |
27Shelomi's son Ahihud to be leader of the tribe of Asher, | 27Asher Ahihud son of Shelomi |
28and Ammihud's son Pedahel to be leader of the tribe of Naphtali." | 28Naphtali Pedahel son of Ammihud |
29These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance of the Israelis in the land of Canaan. | 29These are the men the LORD has appointed to divide the grants of land in Canaan among the Israelites.” |
