New Living Translation

1The leaders of the people who lived in Jerusalem, along with the rest of the people, decided to choose one out of ten of them by lot to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, leaving the other nine of them in their towns.

1The leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were.

2And the people blessed all of the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.

2And the people commended everyone who volunteered to resettle in Jerusalem.

3These are the leaders of the provinces who lived in Jerusalem. Some lived in the towns of Judah—each on their property in their respective towns—that is, the Israelis, the priests, the descendants of Levi, the Temple Servants, and the descendants of Solomon's servants.

3Here is a list of the names of the provincial officials who came to live in Jerusalem. (Most of the people, priests, Levites, Temple servants, and descendants of Solomon’s servants continued to live in their own homes in the various towns of Judah,

4Some of the descendants of Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. From Judah's Descendants: Uzziah's son Athaiah, who was the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel; From Perez's Descendants

5Also Maaseiah son of Baruch, son of Col-hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, of the family of Shelah.

6All of the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem numbered 468 men of valor.

6There were 468 descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem—all outstanding men.

7These Benjamin's Descendants: Meshullam's son Sallu, who was the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah;

7From the tribe of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah.

8and after him Gabbai and Sallai, numbering 928

9Zichri's son Joel was their overseer, and Hassenuah's son Judah was in command of the second district of the city.

12Their associates who performed the work of the Temple numbered 822. Jeroham's son Adaiah, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah,

13along with his associates, the leaders of the families, numbered 242, along with Amashsai, the son of Azarel, the son of Ahzai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer,

14along with their relatives, 128 mighty, valiant men, and their overseer Zabdiel son of Haggedolim.

15From the descendants of Levi: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni,

16and Shabbethai and Jozabad, from the leaders of the descendants of Levi who oversaw the exterior work of the Temple of God,

17and Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who led the thanksgiving prayer, and Bakbukiah, second among his relatives, and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

17Also Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph, who led in thanksgiving and prayer. Also Bakbukiah, who was Mattaniah’s assistant, and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.

18All of the descendants of Levi in the holy city numbered 284

18In all, there were 284 Levites in the holy city.

19The Gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, who kept watch at the gates, numbered 172

20The rest of Israel—the priests and the descendants of Levi—lived in all the cities of Judah, each on his own property,

20The other priests, Levites, and the rest of the Israelites lived wherever their family inheritance was located in any of the towns of Judah.

21but the Temple Servants lived on Ophel. Ziha and Gishpa oversaw the Temple Servants.

21The Temple servants, however, whose leaders were Ziha and Gishpa, all lived on the hill of Ophel.

22The overseer of the descendants of Levi at Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica. Singers from the descendants of Asaph oversaw the work of the Temple of God.

22The chief officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, a descendant of Asaph, whose family served as singers at God’s Temple.

23They were subject to the commands of the king, who provided for the singers daily.

23Their daily responsibilities were carried out according to the terms of a royal command.

24Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, a descendant of Zerah son of Judah, represented the king in all matters concerning the people.

24Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, a descendant of Zerah son of Judah, was the royal adviser in all matters of public administration.

25Now concerning the villages and their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its villages, in Dibon and its villages, in Jekabzeel and its villages,

26in Jeshua, in Moladah, and Beth-pelet,

31The descendants of Benjamin lived from Geba to Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its villages,

32Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,

36with some Levitical divisions of Judah pertaining to Benjamin.

36Some of the Levites who lived in Judah were sent to live with the tribe of Benjamin.
