Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; |
Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. | 2so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. |
So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan 10 years. | 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. |
He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she realized that she was pregnant, she treated her mistress with contempt. | 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between me and you." | 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. | 6"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. |
The Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. | 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. |
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." | 8And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. |
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, "You must go back to your mistress and submit to her mistreatment." | 9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." |
The Angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." | 10The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count." |
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her: You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. | 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. |
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will live at odds with all his brothers. | 12He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers." |
So she called the LORD who spoke to her: The God Who Sees, for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the One who sees me?" | 13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." |
That is why she named the spring, "A Well of the Living One Who Sees Me." It is located between Kadesh and Bered. | 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. |
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son Hagar had. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. |
Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael. |
