Then Job answered and said: | 1Then Job replied: |
“How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! | 2"How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the person who has no strength! |
How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! | 3How you have advised the one without wisdom, and abundantly revealed your insight! |
With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you? | 4To whom did you utter these words? And whose spirit has come forth from your mouth? |
The dead tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. | 5"The dead tremble--those beneath the waters and all that live in them. |
Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. | 6The underworld is naked before God; the place of destruction lies uncovered. |
He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. | 7He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth on nothing. |
He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. | 8He locks the waters in his clouds, and the clouds do not burst with the weight of them. |
He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. | 9He conceals the face of the full moon, shrouding it with his clouds. |
He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness. | 10He marks out the horizon on the surface of the waters as a boundary between light and darkness. |
The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. | 11The pillars of the heavens tremble and are amazed at his rebuke. |
By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. | 12By his power he stills the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab the great sea monster to pieces. |
By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. | 13By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. |
Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” | 14Indeed, these are but the outer fringes of his ways! How faint is the whisper we hear of him! But who can understand the thunder of his power?" |
