Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because of the Cushite woman he married (for he had married a Cushite woman). | 1While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman. |
They said, "Does the LORD speak only through Moses? Does he not also speak through us?" And the LORD heard it. | 2They said, “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the LORD heard them. |
Moses was a very humble man, more so than anyone on the face of the earth. | 3(Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.) |
Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "You three come out to the tent of meeting." So the three of them went out. | 4So immediately the LORD called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam and said, “Go out to the Tabernacle, all three of you!” So the three of them went to the Tabernacle. |
Then the LORD descended in a pillar of cloud, stood at the entrance to the tent, and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them came forward, | 5Then the LORD descended in the pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle. “Aaron and Miriam!” he called, and they stepped forward. |
he said: "Listen to what I say: If there is a prophet among you from the LORD, I make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. | 6And the LORD said to them, “Now listen to what I say: “If there were prophets among you, I, the LORD, would reveal myself in visions. I would speak to them in dreams. |
Not so with my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my household. | 7But not with my servant Moses. Of all my house, he is the one I trust. |
I speak with him directly, openly, and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. So why were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" | 8I speak to him face to face, clearly, and not in riddles! He sees the LORD as he is. So why were you not afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” |
The LORD's anger burned against them, and he left. | 9The LORD was very angry with them, and he departed. |
As the cloud moved away from the tent, Miriam's skin suddenly became diseased, resembling snow. When Aaron turned toward her, he saw that she was diseased | 10As the cloud moved from above the Tabernacle, there stood Miriam, her skin as white as snow from leprosy. When Aaron saw what had happened to her, |
and said to Moses, "My lord, please don't hold against us this sin we have so foolishly committed. | 11he cried out to Moses, “Oh, my master! Please don’t punish us for this sin we have so foolishly committed. |
Please don't let her be like a dead baby whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes out of his mother's womb." | 12Don’t let her be like a stillborn baby, already decayed at birth.” |
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, "God, please heal her!" | 13So Moses cried out to the LORD, “O God, I beg you, please heal her!” |
The LORD answered Moses, "If her father had merely spit in her face, wouldn't she remain in disgrace for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp for seven days; after that she may be brought back in." | 14But the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had done nothing more than spit in her face, wouldn’t she be defiled for seven days? So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.” |
So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until Miriam was brought back in. | 15So Miriam was kept outside the camp for seven days, and the people waited until she was brought back before they traveled again. |
After that, the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the Wilderness of Paran. | 16Then they left Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran. |
