Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. |
Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. | 2So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him. |
So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan ten years. | 3So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife. |
He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she saw that she was pregnant, her mistress became contemptible to her. | 4He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the LORD judge between me and you." | 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!" |
Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. | 6Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai. |
The angel of the LORD found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. | 7The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur. |
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." | 8He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai." |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority." | 9Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority. |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." | 10I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count." |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. | 11Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans. |
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will settle near all his relatives." | 12He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers." |
So she named the LORD who spoke to her: "You are El-roi," for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?" | 13So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!" |
That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered. | 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.) |
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram named his son (whom Hagar bore) Ishmael. | 15So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael. |
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. | 16(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.) |
