LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide in times of trouble? | 1Why, O LORD, do You stand far off? Why do You hide in times of trouble? |
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue their victims; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. | 2In pride the wicked pursue the needy; let them be caught in the schemes they devise. |
For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the LORD. | 3For the wicked man boasts in the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. |
In all his scheming, the wicked person arrogantly thinks, "There's no accountability, since there's no God." | 4In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God. |
His ways are always secure; your lofty judgments have no effect on him; he scoffs at all his adversaries. | 5He is secure in his ways at all times; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes. |
He says to himself, "I will never be moved--from generation to generation without calamity." | 6He says to himself, “I will not be moved; from age to age I am free of distress.” |
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth; trouble and malice are under his tongue. | 7His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence; trouble and malice are under his tongue. |
He waits in ambush near settlements; he kills the innocent in secret places. His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless; | 8He lies in wait near the villages; in ambush he slays the innocent; his eyes watch in stealth for the helpless. |
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket. He lurks in order to seize a victim; he seizes a victim and drags him in his net. | 9He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket; he lurks to seize the oppressed; he catches the lowly in his net. |
So he is oppressed and beaten down; helpless people fall because of the wicked one's strength. | 10They are crushed and beaten down; the hapless fall prey to his strength. |
He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he hides his face and will never see." | 11He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and never sees.” |
Rise up, LORD God! Lift up your hand. Do not forget the oppressed. | 12Arise, O LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God! Do not forget the helpless. |
Why has the wicked person despised God? He says to himself, "You will not demand an account." | 13Why has the wicked man renounced God? He says to himself, “You will never call me to account.” |
But you yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into your hands. The helpless one entrusts himself to you; you are a helper of the fatherless. | 14But You have regarded trouble and grief; You see to repay it by Your hand. The victim entrusts himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless. |
Break the arm of the wicked, evil person, until you look for his wickedness, but it can't be found. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account for his wickedness until none is left to be found. |
The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish from His land. |
LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble; you will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully, | 17You have heard, O LORD, the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will incline Your ear, |
doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed so that mere humans from the earth may terrify them no more. | 18to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more. |
