| 2To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. | 2Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. |
| 3As I urged you on my departure to Macedonia, you should stay on at Ephesus to instruct certain men not to teach false doctrines | 3As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, |
| 4or devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculation rather than the stewardship of God’s work, which is by faith. | 4Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. |
| 5The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith. | 5Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: |
| 6Some have strayed from these ways and turned aside to empty talk. | 6From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; |
| 7They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or that which they so confidently assert. | 7Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. |
| 8Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it legitimately. | 8But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; |
| 9We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for killers of father or mother, for murderers, | 9Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, |
| 10for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching | 10For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; |
| 11that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. | 11According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. |
| 12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, that He considered me faithful and appointed me to service. | 12And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; |
| 13I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man; yet because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief, I was shown mercy. | 13Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. |
| 14And the grace of our Lord overflowed to me, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. | 14And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. |
| 15This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. | 15This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. |
| 16But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life. | 16Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. |
| 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. | 17Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. |
| 18Timothy, my child, I entrust you with this command in keeping with the previous prophecies about you, so that by them you may fight the good fight, | 18This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; |
| 19holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and thereby shipwrecked their faith. | 19Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: |
| 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. | 20Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. |
