Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no children, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. | 1Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. |
So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. | 2Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. |
So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife. | 3So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan 10 years. |
And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. | 4He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she realized that she was pregnant, she treated her mistress with contempt. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.” | 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between me and you." |
“Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her. | 6Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. |
Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur. | 7The Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. |
“Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied. | 8He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." |
So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.” | 9Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, "You must go back to your mistress and submit to her mistreatment." |
Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.” | 10The Angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." |
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. | 11Then the Angel of the LORD said to her: You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. |
He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.” | 12This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will live at odds with all his brothers. |
So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!” | 13So she called the LORD who spoke to her: The God Who Sees, for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the One who sees me?" |
Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered. | 14That is why she named the spring, "A Well of the Living One Who Sees Me." It is located between Kadesh and Bered. |
And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. | 15So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son Hagar had. |
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. | 16Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. |
