Meaning: a Nicolaitan, possibly a follower of Nicolaus (a heretic at Ephesus).

Word Origin: From the Greek words "νίκη" (nikē, meaning "victory") and "λαός" (laos, meaning "people").

Corresponding Greek / Hebrew Entries: There are no direct Hebrew equivalents for the term "Nicolaitan," as it is a specific reference to a group within the early Christian context.

Usage: The term "Nikolaités" refers to a sect or group mentioned in the Book of Revelation, known as the Nicolaitans. They are described as holding to certain practices and teachings that were contrary to the teachings of the early Christian church. The Nicolaitans are often associated with moral laxity and idolatry, promoting a lifestyle that compromised with pagan practices.

Cultural and Historical Background: The Nicolaitans are believed to have been a heretical group in the early Christian church, possibly emerging in the first century. Some early church fathers, such as Irenaeus and Hippolytus, suggested that the Nicolaitans were followers of Nicolas, one of the seven deacons mentioned in Acts 6:5, although this connection is debated. The Nicolaitans are thought to have advocated for a form of antinomianism, which rejected the moral law as binding on Christians, leading to practices that were considered immoral and idolatrous by the early church.

STRONGS NT 3531: Νικολαΐτης

Νικολαΐτης, Νικολαιτου, , a follower of Nicolaus, a Nicolaitan: plural, Revelation 2:6, 15 — a name which, it can scarcely be doubted, refers symbolically to the same persons who in Revelation 2:14 are charged with holding τήν διδαχήν Βαλαάμ, i. e. after the example of Balaam, casting a stumblingblock before the church of God (Numbers 24:1-3) by upholding the liberty of eating things sacrificed unto idols as well as of committing fornication; for the Greek name Νικόλαος coincides with the Hebrew בִּלְעָם according to the interpretation of the latter which regards it as signifying destruction of the people. See in Βαλαάμ; (cf. BB. DD., under the words Nicolaitans, Nicolas; also commentaries on Revelation, at the passages cited).
