Strong's Lexicon
lenos: Winepress

Original Word: ληνός
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: lenos
Pronunciation: lay-NOS
Phonetic Spelling: (lay-nos')
Definition: Winepress
Meaning: a trough, vat, winepress.

Word Origin: Derived from a primary root word in Greek, related to pressing or treading.

Corresponding Greek / Hebrew Entries: - H3342 (יַקְבֵּי, yeqeb): Refers to a winepress or vat.

- H1660 (גַּת, gath): Another term for a winepress, often used in the context of treading grapes.

Usage: The term "lenos" refers to a winepress, a device or structure used in ancient times for extracting juice from grapes to produce wine. In the New Testament, it is often used metaphorically to describe judgment or divine wrath, as the process of pressing grapes can symbolize the outpouring of God's justice.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Israel and the broader Mediterranean world, wine production was a significant agricultural activity. Winepresses were typically hewn out of rock or constructed from wood and stone. The process involved treading grapes underfoot, a vivid image that the biblical authors used to convey themes of judgment and harvest. The winepress was not only a tool for production but also a symbol of abundance and blessing, as well as judgment and wrath when used metaphorically.
