(a) Being now swallowed up by death, and seeing no remedy to escape, his faith broke out to the Lord, knowing that out of this very hell he was able to deliver him. And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. (b) For he was now in the fishes belly as in a grave or place of darkness. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. (c) This declared what his prayer was, and how he laboured between hope and despair, considering the neglect of his vocation, and God's judgments for it: but yet in the end faith gained the victory. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. (d) You have delivered me from the belly of the fish and all these dangers, as it were raising me from death to life. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. (e) Those that depend upon anything except on God alone. (f) They refuse their own felicity, and that goodness which they would otherwise receive from God. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
