EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
(17) Fifteen years.—He came to the throne in the second year of Jehoash, who reigned sixteen years (2Kings 13:10), and reigned twenty-nine years (2Kings 14:2). The different data are thus self-consistent. Jehoash appears to have died very soon after his victory—perhaps in the following year.

14:15-22 Amaziah survived his conqueror fifteen years. He was slain by his own subjects. Azariah, or Uzziah, seems to have been very young when his father was slain. Though the years of his reign are reckoned from that event, he was not fully made king till eleven years afterwards. These two verses (repeated from 2 Kings 13:12-13) are out of place here, where they interrupt the history of Amaziah's reign. 2Ki 14:17-20. He Is Slain by a Conspiracy. No text from Poole on this verse.

And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years. Which, with the fourteen he reigned contemporary with him, made the twenty nine years he reigned, 2 Kings 14:2. The Vulgate Latin version is, "twenty five years". And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
17–22. Close of the reign of Amaziah. He is slain by his subjects. Succession of Azariah in Judah (2 Chronicles 25:25-28; 2 Chronicles 26:1-2)

17. Amaziah … lived after the death of Jehoash] It has been already noticed that this is not the usual way in which the continuance of a king’s reign is described. It may be that while Jehoash was on the throne of Israel Amaziah was kept in subjection, if not a prisoner, and even after that never came again to the full enjoyment of his power.

Verse 17. - And Amaziah the son of Joash King of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz King of Israel fifteen years. This note of time is based on ver. 2, which makes Amaziah begin to reign in the second year of Joash of Israel, and hold the throne for twenty-nine years. If he really began to reign in the fourth year of Joash, he would have survived him only thirteen years (see the comment on ver. 2). 2 Kings 14:17The repetition of the notice concerning the end of the reign of Joash, together with the formula from 2 Kings 13:12 and 2 Kings 13:13, may probably be explained from the fact, that in the annals of the kings of Israel it stood after the account of the war between Jehoash and Amaziah. This may be inferred from the circumstance that the name of Joash is spelt invariably יהואשׁ here, whereas in the closing notices in 2 Kings 13:12 and 2 Kings 13:13 we have the later form יואשׁ, the one which was no doubt adopted by the author of our books. But he might be induced to give these notices once more as he found them in his original sources, from the statement in 2 Kings 14:17, that Amaziah outlived Jehoash fifteen years, seeing therein a manifestation of the grace of God, who would not destroy Amaziah notwithstanding his pride, but delivered him, through the death of his victor, from further injuries at his hands. As Amaziah ascended the throne in the second year of the sixteen years' reign of Jehoash, and before his war with Israel made war upon the Edomites and overcame them, the war with Israel can only fall in the closing years of Jehoash, and this king cannot very long have survived his triumph over the king of Judah.
