Joshua 21
Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites
The Levites' Inheritance: Cities of Service and Sanctuary

The allotment of cities to the Levites illustrates God's providence, justice, and faithfulness. It underscores the theme of service and responsibility vested upon the Levites. As they settle in their cities, we are reminded of God's unerring faithfulness to His promises and the peace He grants to those who obey Him.

Petition of the Levites (Verse 1)

The Levites approach Eleazar, Joshua, and the heads of the tribes at Shiloh, reminding them of God's command through Moses to assign cities and pasturelands to the Levites.

Distribution to the Levites (Verses 2-7)

Upon God's command, the Israelites give cities and pasturelands from their own territories to the Levites, distributed by lot among the clans of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari.

Allotments to the Descendants of Aaron (Verses 8-13)

The priestly descendants of Aaron, from the Kohathite clans, receive thirteen cities from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, including Hebron (a city of refuge) and fields previously given to Caleb.

Allotments to the Remaining Kohathites (Verses 14-20)

The rest of the Kohathite clans receive ten cities from Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, including Shechem, another city of refuge.

Allotments to the Gershonites (Verses 21-28)

The Gershonite clans receive thirteen cities from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, including the city of refuge, Golan.

Allotments to the Merarites (Verses 29-33)

The Merarite clans receive twelve cities from the tribes of Zebulun, Reuben, and Gad, including Ramoth in Gilead, another city of refuge.

Fulfillment of God's Promise (Verses 34-43)

In total, the Levites receive forty-eight cities and their surrounding pasturelands. This completes the Israelites' possession of the land, and God grants them rest from their enemies. God's promises to the fathers of Israel are fulfilled entirely.

This remarkable chapter presents the allotment of cities and pasturelands to the Levites, as per God's command. It serves as an affirmation of the LORD's faithfulness to Israel, concluding with the fulfillment of God's promises to the forefathers.
