Or'no, also known as Araunah, is a significant biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament. He is primarily recognized as a Jebusite who owned a threshing floor on Mount Moriah, the site that later became the location of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. The narrative of Or'no is found in the books of 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles, where his interaction with King David is detailed.

Biblical Account

The account of Or'no is most prominently featured in 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21. In these passages, King David, having sinned by conducting a census of Israel, is given a choice of three punishments by the prophet Gad. David chooses to fall into the hands of the Lord, resulting in a plague that devastates the land. As the angel of the Lord is about to destroy Jerusalem, God relents, and David is instructed to build an altar on the threshing floor of Or'no to halt the plague.

2 Samuel 24:18-25 describes the encounter: "So Gad came to David that day and said to him, 'Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.' So David went up at the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded. When Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king. 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah said. 'To buy your threshing floor,' David replied, 'so that I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be halted.'"

Or'no generously offers the threshing floor and the oxen for the burnt offering at no cost. However, David insists on purchasing it, stating, "I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing" (2 Samuel 24:24). David buys the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver, builds an altar, and offers sacrifices, leading to the cessation of the plague.

Theological Significance

Or'no's threshing floor holds profound theological significance as the site where David's altar was built, marking the location where God's mercy was demonstrated by halting the plague. This site later becomes the foundation for the Temple in Jerusalem, a central place of worship and sacrifice for the Israelites. The narrative underscores themes of repentance, sacrifice, and the importance of offering to God that which is valuable and costly.

Historical and Cultural Context

Or'no, as a Jebusite, belonged to the original inhabitants of Jerusalem before its conquest by David. The Jebusites were a Canaanite tribe, and their presence in Jerusalem highlights the city's diverse cultural and ethnic history. The interaction between David and Or'no reflects the peaceful coexistence and mutual respect that could exist between the Israelites and the remaining Canaanite populations.

Legacy

The account of Or'no is a testament to the importance of obedience to God and the necessity of genuine sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the significance of the Temple Mount, a site revered in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Or'no's willingness to offer his property for the service of God exemplifies a spirit of generosity and devotion that is celebrated in biblical narratives.
