The Libnites are a Levitical family descended from Libni, a son of Gershon, who was the eldest son of Levi. As part of the tribe of Levi, the Libnites were set apart for religious duties and service in the tabernacle. The Gershonites, including the Libnites, were responsible for the care of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and other fabric elements during the Israelites' wilderness wanderings. Numbers 3:21-26 outlines their specific duties: "From Gershon came the Libnite clan and the Shimeite clan; these were the Gershonite clans. The number of all the males a month old or more was 7,500. The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle. The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. The duties of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting involved the tabernacle, the tent, its covering, the curtain for the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the cords—all the service for these items."

Hebronites

The Hebronites are another Levitical family, descended from Hebron, a son of Kohath, who was the second son of Levi. The Kohathites, including the Hebronites, had the responsibility of caring for the most sacred objects of the tabernacle, such as the Ark of the Covenant, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the sacred utensils. Numbers 3:27-31 describes their duties: "From Kohath came the Amramite clan, the Izharite clan, the Hebronite clan, and the Uzzielite clan; these were the Kohathite clans. The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600. The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary. The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle. The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel. Their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and all the service for these items."

Mahlites

The Mahlites are a Levitical family descended from Mahli, a son of Merari, who was the third son of Levi. The Merarites, including the Mahlites, were tasked with the care of the structural components of the tabernacle, such as the frames, bars, pillars, and bases. Numbers 3:33-36 details their responsibilities: "From Merari came the Mahlite clan and the Mushite clan; these were the Merarite clans. The number of all the males a month old or more was 6,200. The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail. They were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. The duties assigned to the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and all the service for these items."

Mushites

The Mushites are another Levitical family descended from Mushi, a son of Merari. Like the Mahlites, the Mushites were part of the Merarite division and shared in the responsibilities for the tabernacle's structural elements. Their duties were integral to the assembly and disassembly of the tabernacle as the Israelites moved through the wilderness. Numbers 3:33-36, as cited above, includes the Mushites in the description of the Merarite responsibilities.

Korahites

The Korahites are a Levitical family descended from Korah, a son of Izhar, who was a son of Kohath. The Korahites are perhaps best known for the rebellion led by Korah against Moses and Aaron, as recorded in Numbers 16. Despite this infamous event, the descendants of Korah were later integrated into the Levitical duties and became known for their role in temple worship. They were responsible for various aspects of temple service, including gatekeeping and singing. Several Psalms are attributed to the sons of Korah, reflecting their significant contribution to the worship life of Israel. 1 Chronicles 9:19 highlights their role: "Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the Tent just as their fathers had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD."
