Topical Encyclopedia
The Fellowship Offering, also known as the Peace Offering, is a significant sacrificial practice detailed in the Old Testament, primarily within the Levitical law. It is a voluntary act of worship, thanksgiving, and communal celebration, emphasizing the relationship between God, the offerer, and the community.

Biblical Foundation

The instructions for the Fellowship Offering are primarily found in the book of Leviticus. Leviticus 3 provides the initial guidelines for this offering, while Leviticus 7:11-21 expands on its regulations. The offering could be made from cattle, sheep, or goats, and it was distinct in that both the fat and certain internal organs were burned on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. The remaining meat was shared between the priests and the offerer, symbolizing communal fellowship.

Purpose and Significance

The Fellowship Offering served multiple purposes:

1. Thanksgiving and Praise: It was a means for the Israelites to express gratitude to God for His blessings and provision. Leviticus 7:12 states, "If he offers it in thanksgiving, then along with the thank offering he is to offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers coated with oil, and well-kneaded cakes of fine flour mixed with oil."

2. Fulfillment of Vows: It was also used in the context of fulfilling vows made to God, as seen in Leviticus 7:16, "If, however, his offering is the result of a vow or a freewill offering, it shall be eaten on the day he presents his sacrifice, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day."

3. Freewill Offering: The Fellowship Offering could be presented as a freewill offering, reflecting the offerer's spontaneous devotion and love for God.

Ritual and Procedure

The ritual of the Fellowship Offering involved the laying of hands on the animal's head, symbolizing the offerer's identification with the sacrifice. The blood of the animal was then sprinkled around the altar, signifying atonement and purification. The fat and certain organs were burned on the altar, while the breast and right thigh were given to the priests as their portion (Leviticus 7:31-34).

Communal Aspect

A unique aspect of the Fellowship Offering was the communal meal that followed. The offerer, along with family and friends, would partake in the meal, symbolizing peace and fellowship with God and one another. This communal aspect underscored the offering's role in fostering unity and harmony within the community of believers.

Theological Implications

Theologically, the Fellowship Offering points to the peace and reconciliation between God and humanity. It prefigures the ultimate peace offering made by Jesus Christ, who, through His sacrificial death, reconciled humanity to God. As Ephesians 2:14 states, "For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility."

Conclusion

The Fellowship Offering, with its emphasis on thanksgiving, communal sharing, and peace, holds a significant place in the worship life of ancient Israel. It reflects the broader biblical themes of gratitude, community, and reconciliation with God, themes that find their ultimate fulfillment in the New Testament through the person and work of Jesus Christ.
