Homilist James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraides not; and it shall be given him. I. IN HIS BESTOWMENT OF THE HIGHEST SPIRITUAL GIFT. "Wisdom "consists in choosing those ends which are Worthy of our nature, which are the highest within the reach of our faculties, and in the employment of the best means in the best way for the attainment of those ends. It stands, in one word, for moral excellence or religion — the chief good. II. In His bestowment of the highest spiritual gift ON THE SIMPLEST CONDITION. "Let him ask." This means soul-asking, an earnest, importunate, persistent yearning. 1. The man who does not intensely desire this "wisdom," or religion, will never have it. 2. The man who does intensely desire it is sure to have it. III. In His bestowment of the highest spiritual gift, on the simplest condition, IN A SPIRIT OF SUBLIME GENEROSITY. He gives in a spirit of — 1. Impartiality; 2. Genuine liberality; 3. Unreproaching affection. (Homilist.)
