Isaiah 27:8 In measure, when it shoots forth, you will debate with it: he stays his rough wind in the day of the east wind. The critics find fault with Rubens' picture of the Crucifixion — they say he has painted Golgotha like a garden where, you can scarcely see the skulls for the flowers. This may, perhaps, be a defective picture of Golgotha, but it is a grand symbolic picture of our world; the things of sadness, pain, and death being half-hidden by the flowers which mercy has caused everywhere to grow. (W. L. Watkinson.) Parallel Verses KJV: In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind. |
