Romans 3:9-20 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;… I remember a gentleman taking exception to an address based upon this text. He said, "Do you mean to say that there is no difference between an honest man and a dishonest one; between a sober man and a temperate man?" "No," I remarked, "I did not affirm that there was no room for comparison between such cases; but my position is that if two men were standing here, the one intemperate and the other sober, I should say of the one, "This is an intemperate sinner, and the other a sober sinner." My friend did not know how to meet the difficulty, but answered, "Well, I don't like such teaching." Very quietly I replied, "Then I will make some concession, and meet your difficulty. I will admit that there are many 'superior sinners,' and that you are a 'superior sinner.'" I shall not soon forget my friend's expression of countenance when he had taken stock of the argument. (H. Varley.) Parallel Verses KJV: What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; |
