Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. Righteousness signifies justice and honest dealing. It may be enlarged to include mercy and charity. A more comprehensive meaning is universal obedience to the laws of God. I. TRUE RELIGION AND PIETY EXALTETH A NATION. Religion is the mother of justice, moderation, mercy, and all other virtues. 1. This it does in itself; being in its own nature a truly great, noble, and honourable thing. A nation's power without piety is but an ability to do mischief. 2. By virtue of its own natural fruits and consequences, it promotes industry. It disposes men to mind the public good and honour of the nation. II. RELIGION PROCURES THE BLESSING OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE UPON THE COUNTRY. True religion binds men together, and so makes them mighty and formidable, by removing the causes of division, and by making them feel the happy effects of peace and quietness. True religion increases a people into a multitude by securing chaste marriages, and by inviting other people to resort to it. (Bishop Patrick Symon.)
