The Almighty was disclosed in presence and purpose, in prediction and promise, as standing up over the ladder of grace for a fallen world. 2. See the effect of this discovery upon Jacob. (1) The first thing it did was to frighten him. (2) The next effect seems to have been some sort of sense of guilt. He vaguely feels the need of propitiation. II. LESSONS. The truest way to produce conviction of sin is to make a disclosure of Divine holiness. 2. The uselessness of mere religious emotion without establishment of principle. 3.
