The heart wanted a heart; life demanded life. The world had lived long enough on written promises; the cold parchment was becoming colder day by day. There was an aching at the heart of society — a great trouble — an exciting wonder. The call had a peculiar charm about it in so far as it demanded attachment to a visible person.
