It is not enough that a man should display the law of holiness; he must display the beauty of holiness. There are some whose religion has every quality but one — attractive. ness. They are animated by the sincerest motives; they are ruled by the tenderest conscience; they are influenced by the purest desires; yet their religion is withal a weapon in the hand, not a magnet in the heart; it drives, but it does not draw. They are impressed above all things with the power" of the Lord, and they would like to display His power; but they do not see that the uppermost garment of the religious life must be the beauty of the Lord. They have not measured the force of the words of the text. The highest power of the Cross is ability to allure — its beauty. The glory of religion lies in the number of things it can attract. (G.
