Visiting him at his studio, Nollekens found him listening to a Colonel Hamilton, who was playing superbly on the violin. "Go on, go on," cried Gainsborough, with excited enthusiasm, as the Colonel appeared to have finished. Then, in a burst of entreaty, he added, "Go on, and I will give you the picture of the boy at the style, which you have so often wished to purchase." As Hamilton continued to play the tears stood in the painter's eyes, and at the end a coach was called, in which the fortunate Colonel placed the painting he had so long coveted, and so easily acquired: and he drove away with it. Gainsborough could not resist nor refuse anything to the charm of music.
