Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) The two threads which run through this Epistle — the defence of the apostle's own authority, and the maintenance of the doctrine of grace — are knotted together in the opening salutation. By expanding his official title into statement of his direct commission from God (verse 1), St. Paul meets the personal attack of his opponents; by dwelling on the work of redemption in connection with the name of Christ (verse 4), he protests against their doctrinal errors.
