EDIFICATION denotes a new development and a confirmation of the faith by some new view fitted to strengthen the soul. II. EXHORTATION denotes an encouragement addressed to the will, an energetic impulse capable of effecting an awakening or advancement in Christian fidelity, relating to love as the former relates to faith. III. COMFORT points rather to hope, παραμυθείν, to soothe the ear with a sweet myth, putting pain to sleep, or reviving hope. (Prof. Godet.)
