Luke 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, so that they stepped one on another… 1. The worldly hypocrite, who professes godliness from worldly motives. 2. The legal hypocrite, who resigns his vicious practices to win heaven, but has no love to God. 3. The evangelical hypocrite, whose religion is an acknowledgment of sin, but with no desire to lead a godly life. 4. The enthusiastic hypocrite, who has an imaginary notion of the Saviour, and relies on impulses and feelings, and yet clings to vicious deeds. (Van Doren.) Parallel Verses KJV: In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. |
