1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. Abstain from every form of evil, whether practical or doctrinal. I. WE NEED TO BE WARNED AGAINST EVIL. 1. Because we naturally tend to do evil. 2. Because evil is so injurious to our spirits, in repressing joy, prayer, and thanksgiving. 3. Because it gives offence to others. Therefore we ought to abhor that which is evil, to cleave to that which is good. II. THE FORMS OF EVIL ARE VERY VARIOUS, AND THEREFORE NOT EASILY DETECTED. Truth is one; error is manifold.
