1And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away (Is.65:17); and there was no more sea. 2And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is now with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. (Ezek.37:23,27) 4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.” 5And He Who was seated upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write; for these words are true and faithful.” 6And He further said to me, “It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give to him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7Those that overcome shall inherit all things; and I will be their God, and they shall be My sons and daughters. 8But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, and fornicators (sexually promiscuous), sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, shall take their place and share in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” In verses, 21:3 and 21:7, God repeats the essence of what He has told us throughout Scripture - from the beginning, Genesis, to the end, Revelation. Despite the innumerable times that His people have disappointed, angered, and grieved Him over the course of history, from Genesis up to the present day; He is not thwarted in His intent and resolve to bless and redeem us. Just this one facet of Scripture – seen from Gen. 17:7, on through Ex.6:7, 29:45, Lev.11:45, 20:26, 26:12, Jer.7:23, 11:4, 24:7, 30:22, 31:1, 31:33, 32:38, Ez.11:20, 14:11, 36:28, 37:23,27 Hos.1:9-10, 2:23, Zech.8:8, 13:9, Rom.9:25-26, 2Cor.6:15, Heb.8:10, and then in these two verses, He reveals one notable characteristic of our God: His faithfulness and resolute patience as He perseveres in His determination that they will indeed be His people, and He will be their God. One thing is clear - God is not a quitter! We may waiver and disappoint - but He does not quit! 9And one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls of the seven last plagues came and talked with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11Shining with the glory of God; and her brilliance was like a very precious jewel - like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12It had a wall, great and high, with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates; and names written on the gates were the names of the twelve tribes of Israel: 13There were three gates on the east; three gates on the north; three gates on the south; and three gates on the west. 14And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15And the angel that talked with me had a golden reed (rod) to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16And the city was laid out foursquare, with its length the same as its breadth; and he measured the city with the reed. Its length, breadth and height were equal - twelve thousand furlongs (about 1,400 miles). 17And he measured the wall of it, a hundred forty-four cubits thick (about 216 feet), according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. 18And its wall was made of jasper; and the city was of pure gold, like clear glass. 19And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; 20The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprase; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. 21And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was of one pearl; and the main street of the city was pure gold, as clear as transparent glass. 22And I saw no temple in it; for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. 23And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, to shine in it; for the glory of God illuminated it, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in the light of that Lamp, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor and honor into it. 25And its gates shall never be shut at the end of the day; for there shall be no night there. 26And the glory and honor of the nations shall be brought into it. 27And nothing that defiles, nor anyone who does what is shameful, or deceitful, shall in any way enter it, but only they who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
