1Then the daughters of Zelophehad, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah, came forward. Their father, Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, a son of Gilead, a son of Machir, a son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, son of Joseph. 2And Zelophehad’s daughters stood before Moses and Eleazar, the priest, and before the leaders of all the congregation, by the entrance of the tabernacle of meeting, and said, 3“Our father died in the wilderness, and he was among those that banded together against the LORD with Korah; but died for his own sin, and had no sons. 4Why should the name of our father disappear from among his clan, because he has no son? Give to us also a possession among the brothers of our father.” 5And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. 6And the LORD said to Moses, 7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: you shall surely give them an inheritance for a possession among their father's brothers; and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. 8And you shall tell the children of Israel, ‘If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. 9And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest kinsman of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be a statute of judgment to the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.’” 12And the LORD said to Moses, “Go up into this mountain in the Abarim range, and view the land which I have given to the children of Israel. 13And when you have seen it, you shall also be gathered to your people, as Aaron, your brother, was gathered. 14For you rebelled against My command in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify Me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.” 15And Moses said to the LORD, 16“Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 17Who may go before them, and lead them out, and bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD is not like sheep with no shepherd.” 18And the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua, son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand upon him; 19And set him before Eleazar, the priest, and before the entire congregation; and publicly give him a commission in their presence. 20And you shall give him some of your authority, that all the congregation of the Israelites may obey him. 21And he shall stand before Eleazar, the priest, who shall ask counsel for him by inquiring judgment of Urim before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the congregation of Israelites with him.” 22And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar, the priest, and before all the congregation: 23And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded Moses.
