1This is the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham. 2Abraham was the father of (begat) Isaac; and Isaac of Jacob; and Jacob was the father of Judas (Judah) and his brothers; 3And Judas (Judah) was the father and Tamar (the mother) of Perez and Zerah; and Perez was the father of Hezron; and Hezron the father of Ram; 4And Ram, the father of Amminadab; and Amminadab the father of Nahshon; and Nahshon the father of Salmon; 5And Salmon, the father of Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz, the father and Ruth (the mother) of Obed; and Obed fathered Jesse; 6And Jesse fathered David the king; and David the king fathered Solomon by her (Bathsheba) that had been the wife of Uriah; 7And Solomon fathered Rehoboam; and Rehoboam, the father of Abijah; and Abijah, the father of Asa; 8And Asa, the father of Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat, the father of Joram; and Joram, the father of Uzziah; 9And Uzziah fathered Jotham; and Jotham fathered Ahaz; and Ahaz fathered Hezekiah; 10And Hezekiah fathered Manasseh; and Manasseh fathered Amon; and Amon fathered Josiah; 11And Josiah fathered Jeconiah and his brothers, about the time that they were carried away to Babylon; 12And after they were taken to Babylon, Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel; and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel; 13And Zerubbabel fathered Abiud; and Abiud fathered Eliakim; and Eliakim fathered Azor; 14And Azor fathered Sadoc; and Sadoc fathered Achim; and Achim fathered Eliud; 15And Eliud fathered Eleazar; and Eleazar fathered Matthan; and Matthan fathered Jacob; 16And Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, Who is called Christ. 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen; and from David until the carrying away captive into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon until Christ are fourteen generations. 18Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, took place: When His mother, Mary, was espoused (pledged) to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be pregnant with a Child from the Holy Spirit. 19And because Joseph, her husband, abided by the law, but was not willing to expose her to public disgrace, he decided to break their engagement privately. 20But while he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21And she shall give birth to a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS; for He shall save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this was done to fulfill that which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet (Is.7:14): 23“The virgin shall be with child (conceive), and shall give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us’. 24Then, when Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife; 25But did not consummate their marriage (have sexual relations with her) until she gave birth to her firstborn Son; and Joseph called His name JESUS.
