1When Jesus had spoken these words, He and His disciples went out over the brook, Kidron, and entered a garden. 2And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; because Jesus often resorted there with His disciples. 3The chief priests and Pharisees had given Judas a detachment of soldiers and officers and they all came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Who are you looking for?” 5They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6And when He said to them, “I am He”, they drew backward, and fell to the ground. 7Then He asked them again, “Who is it you want?” And they again said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He; so, if you are looking for Me, let these other men go.” 9He said that to fulfil what He had spoken, “Of those You gave Me, I have lost none.” (17:12). 10Then Simon Peter drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, named Malchus, cutting off his right ear. 11Then Jesus told Peter, “Put your sword away; the cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?” 12Then the detachment, its captain, and Jewish officers, arrested and bound Jesus, 13And took Him first to Annas; the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had counseled the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people. 15And Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus, and because that other disciple was known to the high priest, he went into the palace of the high priest with Jesus. 16But Peter stood outside at the door. Then that disciple who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the servant girl that kept the door, and brought Peter inside. 17Then that girl who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you not also one of this Man's disciples?” Peter replied, “I am not.” 18It was cold; and the servants and officers stood around a fire of coals to warm themselves; and Peter stood and warmed himself with them. 19Then the high priest asked Jesus about His disciples, and about His doctrine (teaching). 20Jesus replied, “I spoke openly to the world; I often taught in the synagogue, and in the Temple, where the Jews always gather; and I have said nothing in secret. 21Why ask Me? Ask those who heard Me what I have said. Surely, they know what I said.” 22And when Jesus said this, one of the officers nearby slapped Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Is this how You answer the high priest?” 23Jesus responded, “If I have said something wrong, say what was wrong; but if I spoke the truth, why did you hit Me?” 24Then Annas had Him sent bound to Caiaphas, the high priest. 25And meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing by the fire, warming himself. And one by the fire said to him, “Are you not one of His disciples?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” 26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the one who ear Peter cut the ear off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27Peter again denied it; and immediately, the rooster crowed. 28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman hall of judgment; and by now it was early morning. But the Jews, - to avoid becoming ceremonially defiled and unable to eat the Passover - did not, themselves, go into the judgment hall. 29Then Pilate (the Roman governor) came out to them, and asked, “What charges do you bring against this Man?” 30They answered, “If He were not a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you.” 31Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him, and judge Him according to your law.” But the Jews said to Pilate, “Only the Romans are permitted to put anyone to death.” 32This served to fulfil what Jesus had said, signifying what kind of death He would die. 33Then Pilate went back into the judgment hall, and summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Are you asking this of yourself, or have others told you this about Me?” 35“Am I a Jew?” Pilate asked, “Your own nation and the chief priests have handed You over to me. What have You done?” 36Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were of this world, then My servants would fight to prevent Me from being arrested by the Jews. But My kingdom is not of this world.” 37Pilate then asked Him, “Are You a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose, I was born, and I came into the world, so that I might testify to the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears My voice.” 38Pilate retorted, “What is truth?” And then he went back out to the Jews, and told them, “I find no fault at all in Him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. So do you want me to release ‘the King of the Jews’ to you?” 40Then they shouted back, “No! Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber, and an insurgent.
