1“These things I have told you, so that you will not be offended and abandon your faith. 2They will put you out of the synagogues; in fact, the time is coming, that whoever kills you will think that he is doing God a service. 3And they will do these things to you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me. 4But I have told you this, so that when the time comes, you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you these things at the beginning, because I was with you.” 5“But now I am going back to Him Who sent Me; and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6But instead, because I have said these things to you, grief and sorrow has filled your heart. 7But I tell you the truth: It is expedient (good for you) that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter (your Advocate - the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and judgment; 9Of sin, because they refuse to believe in Me; 10Of righteousness, because I am going to My Father, where you can see Me no more; 11And of judgment, because the prince of this world (Satan) stands condemned. 12I have much more to say to you, more than you can bear right now. 13But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He shall not speak on His Own; but He shall speak only what He hears; and He will tell you of what is to come. 14He shall glorify Me; for it is from Me that He shall receive what He tells you. 15All that belongs to the Father is Mine; that is why I said that He (the Spirit of truth) shall receive from Me, and shall make it known to you.” 16And Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you shall see Me no more because I go to the Father, and then, after a little while, you shall again see Me.” 17Then some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is saying to us - ‘A little while, and you shall not see Me; and after a little while, and you shall see Me’; and, ‘Because I go to the Father?’” 18They kept asking, “What does He mean when He says, ‘A little while?’ We cannot grasp what He is saying.” 19Now Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him about this, and He said to them, “Do you wonder and ponder among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you shall not see Me; and then, after a little while, and you shall see Me.’? 20Very truly, I tell you, that you shall weep and mourn, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall grieve, but your grief and sorrow shall turn into joy. 21When a woman is in labor, she has pain because her hour for delivery has come; but as soon as she has delivered the child, she forgets her anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. 22And so with you: now is the time for you to have sorrow; but I will see you again, and then your heart shall rejoice, and no one will take that joy from you. 23And in that day you shall no longer ask Me anything. Very truly, I tell you, whatever you shall ask, you shall ask the Father directly in My name, and He will give to you. 24Up until now, you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you shall receive, and your joy will be full (complete). 25I have been speaking figuratively to you, in proverbs; but soon, I shall no longer speak to you in proverbs, but I shall tell you plainly about the Father. 26At that time, you shall ask in My name; and I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No! For the Father Himself loves you because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God. 28I came from the Father, and have entered the world; and now I shall leave the world, and return to the Father.” 29Then His disciples said to Him, “Now You are speaking plainly, and not with proverbs or figures of speech. 30Now we can see that You know all things, and do not need to have anyone ask You any questions; and by this, we believe that You have come forth from God.” 31Jesus responded by asking them, “Do you now believe? 32Behold, the time is coming, and, indeed is now, that you shall be scattered, each to his own house, and shall leave Me all alone; and yet I will not be alone, because the Father is with Me. 33I have told you these things, so that in Me you might have peace. In this world you shall have tribulation (trouble); but be of good cheer (take heart): for I have overcome the world.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
