1And when Jeremiah had finished reciting to the people all the words of the LORD, their God, that He had sent him to tell them, 2Then Azariah, son of Hoshaiah, Johanan, son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men, said to Jeremiah, “You lie! The LORD, our God, has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go to settle in Egypt;’ 3But Baruch, son of Neriah, prompts you to hand us over to the Chaldeans, that they might kill us or carry us as captives to Babylon.” 4So Johanan, son of Kareah, all the army commanders and the people disobeyed the command of the LORD to stay in the land of Judah. 5Instead, Johanan, son of Kareah, and all the army commanders, led away all the remnant of Judah, that had driven to the nations and had now returned to dwell in the land of Judah. 6Included among those that were led away were men, women, children, the king's daughters, all that Nebuzar-adan, commander of the guard, had left with Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, grandson of Shaphan. They even took Jeremiah, the prophet, and Baruch, son of Neriah. 7And they brought them all into Egypt; in disobedience of the word of the LORD, and went as far as Tahpanhes. 8Then this word of the LORD came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes: 9“With all the remnant of Judah watching, take some large stones, and bury them in the clay under the brick pavement at the entrance of Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes; 10And say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will send for Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, My servant, and he will set his throne upon these stones that I have buried; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them. 11And when he comes, he shall attack Egypt, and kill with the sword all those destined for death; and capture those destined for captivity. 12And he will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt; and carry their idols away as plunder; and he shall pick clean the land of Egypt, like a shepherd picks his garment clean of fleas; and then depart from Egypt unopposed. 13And there, in the temple of the sun, he shall break the images of Beth-shemesh, that are in the land of Egypt; and burn those temples of the gods of the Egyptians.”’” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
