1And Isaac called for Jacob, and blessed him, and said, “You must not marry any of these Canaanite women. 2Instead, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father; and take there a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother (your uncle). 3And may God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and increase your offspring until you become many nations; 4And may He give to you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your progeny; that they may inherit the land in which you are a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.” 5And Isaac sent Jacob on his way: to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel, the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother. 6When Esau learned that his father, Isaac, had blessed, and sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to get a wife from there; and had told him, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;” 7And that Jacob had gone to Paddan-aram, in obedience to his father and his mother; 8Then Esau, seeing that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac; 9He went to Ishmael, and added to the wives he already had, Mahalath, the sister of Nebajoth, and daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son. 10And meanwhile, Jacob journeyed from Beersheba toward Haran. 11He reached a certain place, he spent the night there, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place for his pillow, and lay down there to sleep. 12And he dreamed he saw a ladder set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven: and he saw the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13And the LORD stood above it, and said, “I am the LORD God of Abraham, your father, and of Isaac: I will give the land on which you lie to you, and to your descendants; 14And they shall be as the dust of the earth, and shall spread abroad to the west, east, north, and south: and in you and in your progeny shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15And I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go, and will bring you back into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done what I have spoken to you of.” 16And Jacob awoke; and he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place; and I did not realize it.” 17And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and the gate of heaven.” 18And Jacob arose early that morning, and took the stone that he had used for his pillow, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. 19And he called that place Bethel (“House of God”); but the name of that region had first been called Luz (almond tree). 20And Jacob made this vow, “If God will be with me, watch over me on this journey, and give me food to eat, and clothing to wear, 21So that I return safely to my father's house; then the LORD shall be my God; 22And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house (a place for worshipping God); and of all that He shall give me, I will surely give Him a tenth.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
