1This word of the LORD came again to me, 2“Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother (country), 3And they became prostitutes in Egypt; they committed harlotries in their youth; in that land were their breasts fondled, and their virgin bosoms caressed. 4And their names were Aholah, the elder, and Oholibah, her sister; and they were Mine, and they gave birth to sons and daughters. Their names: Samaria (and Israel) is Aholah, and Jerusalem (and Judah) is Oholibah. 5“And Aholah (Samaria and Israel)) played the harlot when she was still Mine; and lusted after her lovers, her neighbors, the Assyrians, preferring them over Me, 6These Assyrians were clothed in blue - officers and commanders, all of them handsome young men, horsemen riding upon their mounts. 7Thus she gave herself as a prostitute to them, with all the elite of Assyria, and she lusted for them; and defiled herself with all their idols. 8Neither did she give up her harlotries that she began in Egypt; for in her youth men lay with her, and bruised the breasts of her virginity, and indulged their lust upon her. 9Therefore, I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted. 10They stripped her naked; they took away her sons and her daughters, and killed her with the sword. She became notorious among all women; her reputation became her judgment upon her. 11“And when her sister, Oholibah (Judah and Jerusalem), saw this, she became more corrupt in her inordinate lust than she, and in her harlotries more depraved than her sister’s harlotries. 12She also doted upon the Assyrians, her neighbors - officers and commanders, all of them handsome young men, warriors arrayed in gorgeous uniforms, mounted upon their horses. 13Then I saw that she, too, was defiled, that they both went the same way, 14And that she carried her harlotries even further; for when she saw men portrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion (red), 15Girded with belts around their waists, flowing turbans upon their heads, all dressed like chariot officers of the Babylonians, natives of Chaldea; 16And as soon as she saw them, she lusted after them, and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17And the Babylonians came to her, into the bed of love, and they defiled her, and after she was violated by them, she turned from them in disgust. 18And when she openly engaged in her harlotries, and exposed her nakedness; then I was disgusted and turned from her as I had from her sister. 19Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. 20For she lusted upon her paramours, whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. 21Thus you, Oholibah, longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled. 22“Therefore, O Oholibah (Judah and Jerusalem), thus says the LORD God: ‘I will stir up your lovers against you, those you turn away from in disgust, and I will bring them against you on every side: 23The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, all of them handsome young men, officers and commanders, chariot officers, men of high rank, all mounted on horses. 24And they shall come against you with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and a great army, they shall take up positions against you on every side with both large and small shields and helmets. I will turn you over to them for punishment, and they will punish you by their standards. 25And I will direct My jealous anger toward you, and they shall deal furiously with you; they shall cut off your noses and your ears, and those that remain shall die by the sword; they shall take your sons and your daughters; and those left shall be burned by fire. 26They shall also strip you of your clothes, and take away your fine jewels. 27Thus I will put a stop to your lewdness and prostitution that you began in, and brought from Egypt; so that you shall not look to them, nor remember Egypt any more. 28For thus says the LORD God: “Behold, I will deliver you into the hand of those whom you hate, into the hand of those from whom you turned in disgust; 29And they shall deal hatefully with you, and shall take away all that you labored for, and shall leave you naked and bare; your nakedness shall be exposed, with your lewdness and harlotries. 30I will do these things to you, because you have lusted after the nations, and because you are defiled with their idols. 31You have gone the way of your sister; and so I will put her cup into your hand.” 32This is what the LORD God says: “You shall drink deep of your sister's cup; you shall be laughed to scorn and held in derision; that cup is large and deep, and filled with much scorn and derision. 33You shall be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of ruin and desolation - the cup of your sister, Samaria (Israel). 34You shall not just drink of it; you shall drain it out, and break and chew on the shards of it, and tear off your own breasts in anguish; for I have spoken it,” says the LORD God. 35“Therefore, thus says the LORD God: ‘Because you have forgotten Me, and turned your back on Me, you must bear the consequences of your lewdness and your harlotries.’”’” 36The LORD said moreover to me, “Son of man, will you judge Aholah and Oholibah? Yes, confront them with their abominations: 37That they have committed: adultery, shed innocent blood, and committed adultery with their idols, and have also caused their sons, whom they bore to Me, to pass through the fire, as sacrifices to them. 38They have also done this to Me: they have defiled My Temple, and profaned My Sabbaths. 39For when they had slain their children as sacrifices to their idols, then they came the same day into My Temple to desecrate it; that is what they have done in My Temple; 40And, furthermore, they have even sent messengers for men to come from afar; and they came; for whom they washed themselves, painted their eyes, and decked themselves with ornaments, 41And sat upon a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, upon which they have set My incense and My oil. 42And the noise of a carefree crowd was with them; and men of the common sort were brought, Sabeans from the wilderness, who put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43Then I said to her that was long a prostitute, ‘Will they now commit harlotries with her, and she with them?’ 44Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a prostitute; so they went in unto Aholah and Oholibah, the lewd women. 45But righteous men shall judge them as women who commit adultery and shed blood, because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands. 46“For thus says the Sovereign LORD God: ‘I will bring a mob up upon them, and will give them over to terror and spoiling 47And the mob shall stone them, and kill them with their swords; they shall also kill their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses. 48In this way I will purge lewdness from the land, that all women may be taught and take warning not to imitate your lewdness. 49You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry; and you shall know that I am the LORD God.’” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
