1Again this word of the LORD came to me, 2“Son of man, confront Jerusalem about her abominable practices, 3And say, ‘This is what the LORD God says to Jerusalem: “Your birth and your ancestry were in the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite, and your mother, a Hittite. 4And as for your birth, in the day you were born, your navel (umbilical) cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to clean you; nor were you rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling clothes. 5No one looked upon you with pity, to do any of these things for you, to show you any care or compassion; but rather, you were left out in an open field, your person was loathed in the day that you were born. 6And when I passed by you, and saw you kicking in your own blood, I said to you as you lay there in your blood, ‘Live’; yes, I said to you when you lay there all bloody, ‘Live’. 7I have (since) caused you to grow and develop like a bud of the field, and you have flourished and become great, and you have become as beautiful as an excellent jewel; your breasts are formed, and your hair had grown, yet you were naked and bare. 8Then later, when I passed by and looked at you, I saw that you were mature enough for love; and I wrapped My cloak around you, and covered your naked body and gave you My solemn marriage vow. Yes, I swore to you, and entered into a covenant with you”, says the LORD God, “And you became Mine. 9Then I bathed you with water; yes, I thoroughly washed the blood from you, and I anointed you with oil. 10I also clothed you with embroidered work, and shod you with badgers' skin sandals, and I dressed you in fine linen, and I covered you with silk. 11I also adorned you with jewelry, and I put bracelets upon your wrists, and a beautiful gold necklace. 12And I put a jewel on your forehead, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown upon your head. 13Thus you were adorned with gold and silver; and your clothes were of fine linen, silk, and embroidered work; your food was honey, olive oil, and the finest flour; and you were exceedingly beautiful, and you prospered into a kingdom. 14And your fame soon spread among the nations because of your beauty; and the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect”, says the Sovereign God. 15‘But you began to trust in your own beauty, and played the prostitute using your renown, and lavished your fornications on anyone that passed by. 16And you took some of your garments, and used them to make gaudy high places of various colors, and there you played the harlot with idols on shrines; such things had never been, nor should ever be! 17You have also taken the fine jewels of My gold and of My silver, which I had given to you, and made for yourself images of men, and committed harlotry with them, 18And you took your embroidered garments, and dressed your images; and you have offered My oil and My incense before them. 19Also My food, which I gave you, fine flour, and oil, and honey, with which I fed you, you have offered before those images for a fragrant incense; and this is what you did’, says the LORD God. 20‘And you have taken your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and you have sacrificed them to be devoured by these false gods. Were your harlotries not enough? 21That you have also slain My children, offering them through fire to your detestable idols? 22And in all your detestable practices and your harlotries, you have not remembered the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood. 23“Woe, woe to you!” says the LORD God, in addition to all your other wickedness, 24You have also built for yourself an eminent place (a mound), and high places in every street. 25You have built high places at every street corner, and have caused your beauty to be abhorred, spreading your legs to everyone that passed by, increasing your promiscuity. 26You have also added lustful Egypt to your lovers, provoking My anger with your increasing promiscuity. 27Therefore, I have raised My hand against you, and reduced your territory and your food, and turned you over to those that hate you, the Philistines; and even they were shocked at your lewd conduct. 28You have also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because your lust was unsatiable; yes, you played the harlot with them, and were still not satisfied. 29You have added to your promiscuity in the land of Canaan, to include the Chaldeans; and still you were not satisfied with that. 30“How sick is your heart!”, says the LORD God, “That you do all these things, the acts of a brazen prostitute, 31When you build your high places at every street corner, and in every street; but in one aspect, you have been unlike a harlot: in that you scorn payment, 32But more like a wife that commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband! 33They give gifts to (pay) all harlots; but instead, you give gifts to all your lovers, and bribe them, that they may come unto you on all sides for your harlotry. 34And so in your prostitution, you are the opposite of other women engaged in harlotry: because no one pays you to commit harlotries; but instead, you pay and receive no payment; therefore, you are different. 35“Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the LORD. 36Thus says the LORD God: ‘Because you poured out your lust and filthiness, and uncovered your nakedness through your harlotries with your lovers, and with all your detestable idols, and by the blood of your own children, which you sacrificed to them; 37I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have taken pleasure, and all those that you have loved, as well as all those that you have hated; I will gather them around you, and will strip you in front of them, that they may see you stark naked. 38And I will sentence you to the punishment that women that break wedlock in adultery, and shed blood, receive; and I will cover you in blood in My jealous anger. 39And then I will turn you over to the nations who were your lovers, and they shall tear down your high places (mounds), and shall destroy your lofty shrines; they shall also strip you of your clothes, and shall take your fine jewelry, and leave you stark naked. 40They shall also bring a mob against you, who will stone you with stones, and hack you to pieces with their swords. 41And they shall burn down your houses, and punish you in the sight of many women; and I will put a stop to your playing the harlot, and you shall no longer pay your lovers. 42Then My fury toward you will subside, and My jealous anger shall depart from you, and I will be quiet, and will no more be angry. 43Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have enraged Me with all these things; therefore, I also will bring down upon your head what you have done”, says the LORD God, “for you have added lewdness to all your other abominations. 44“Behold, every one that quotes proverbs shall use this proverb about you, ‘Like the mother, so is her daughter.’ 45You are your mother's daughter, that despises her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children; your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46And your older sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that live to your north; and your younger sister, and her daughters, that live to your south, is Sodom. 47You not only followed their detestable practices, but in all your ways, you soon became more depraved than they. 48As surely as I live”, says the LORD God, “Neither Sodom, your sister, nor her daughters, has done as you have done. 49Behold, these were the sins of your sister Sodom: pride, excesses of food and prosperity, arrogance, and abundance of idleness, nor did she help the poor and needy. 50They were haughty, and committed abominations before Me; that is why I did away with them, as you have seen. 51Nor has Samaria committed half of your sins, but you have increased your abominations more than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous compared to all the abominations which you have done. 52You bear your own shame, for the sins that you have committed are more abominable than they; they are more righteous than you; so be ashamed, and confounded also, in that you have justified your evil sisters. 53But someday I shall restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and of Samaria and her daughters, then I will restore you and your exiles along with them, 54So that you may bear your own disgrace, and may be ashamed and confounded by all that you have done, in giving them comfort, 55When your sisters, Sodom with her daughters, and Samaria with her daughters, shall return to what they formerly were, then you and your daughters shall return to what you formerly were. 56For you would not even mention your sister, Sodom, in the days of your pride, 57Before your own wickedness was disclosed. Even so, you are now scorned by the daughters of Syria, and all her neighbors, the Philistines, all those around you, who despise you. 58You shall bear the consequences of your lewdness and detestable practices”, says the LORD. 59“For this is what the Sovereign God says: ‘I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised the oath by breaking your covenant with Me. 60Nevertheless, I will still remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. 61Then you shall remember your ways, and be ashamed, when you shall receive your sisters, both elder and younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of My covenant with you. 62And so I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall know that I am the LORD, 63That you may remember all that you have done, when I make atonement for you, and never again open your mouth because of your shame, when I am reconciled to you,’ says the Sovereign God.’”’” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
