This second letter from the apostle John was written from Ephesus in AD 90. John was nearing the age of 100; and it may be the reason he refers to himself as “the elder”, or he could be referring to his office as elder. There are two views as to whom it is addressed: (1) a mother, whose name is possibly Kyria, and to her children. Her sister’s children are in Ephesus, as was the apostle John, and both mothers are honored with the religious title “elect”, meaning “chosen by God”; or (2) that the apostle John is writing to another church that he addresses as “the elect lady” from the church located at Ephesus. Regardless of the addressee, John expresses true Christian love for the members the family of God, as should all who share in faith in God. and His Son. The theme is abiding in Christ’s commands. 1This letter is from John, the elder, written to the elect lady chosen by God, and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth; 2Because the truth lives in us, and will be with us forever. 3Grace, mercy, and peace, which come to you from God, the Father, and Jesus Christ, His Son, will be with us in truth and love. 4It gave me great joy when I found some of your children living according to the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. 5And now I urge you, lady, not as if writing a new commandment to you, but one which we have had from the beginning - that we love one another. 6And this is love: that we live according to His commandments. This commandment you have heard from the beginning - that you should walk in love. 7I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, have entered the world. Any such person is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Watch out, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but instead, you receive a full reward. 9Whoever wanders from and does not remain faithful to the doctrine of Christ does not have a true relationship with God; but those who continue in the doctrine of Christ, have both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to one of your gatherings, and does not teach this doctrine, do not welcome nor encourage them; 11For whoever welcomes or encourages such a person becomes a partner in their evil deeds. 12I have many things to write to you, but I would rather not use paper and ink; but instead, I hope to visit you, and speak face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13The children of your sister send their greetings to you.
