1Meanwhile, the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and were slain in Mount Gilboa. 2And the Philistines hotly pursued Saul and his sons; and they killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons. 3And the battle was fierce around Saul, and he was severely wounded by the archers. 4Then Saul told his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust it through me; so that these uncircumcised Philistines will not come and run me through, and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer would not; for he was very much afraid. And so, Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 5And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword, and died with him. 6So Saul, his three sons, and his armor-bearer died together, all that same day. 7And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and occupied them. 8And on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa. 9And they cut off Saul’s head, and stripped off his armor, and sent them throughout all the land of the Philistines, to proclaim it in the house of their idols, and among the people. 10And they put Saul’s armor in the house of Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the city wall of Beth-shan. 11And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12The valiant men arose, travelled all night, and took the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and brought them to Jabesh, and burned them there. 13And then they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
