Rabanus Maurus, Bishop of Mayence, was born at Mayence about 776, and died there in 856. He was educated at the cloister school at Fulda, to the headship of which he was soon afterwards appointed. He was made a bishop in 847. He is the author of several works, among them two volumes of hymns. It is by no means certain that he is the author of the famous Latin hymn, "Veni, Creator, Spiritus," here attributed to him. Creator, Spirit! by whose aid 194 |
