Madan, Martin, was born in 1726, and designed to become a member of the English bar; but through the influence of a sermon by [84]John Wesley on the text, "Prepare to meet thy God," he was converted, and at length became a clergyman in the Church of England. He died in 1790. Ile was the editor of a small but famous hymn book: A Collection of Psalms and Hymns Extracted from Various Authors, London, 1760. Several editions of this book were published, and its influence was important in English hymnody. Madan was a popular preacher and a composer of several psalm tunes used in his day. His name appears in this book only in connection with one of the hymns of [85]Isaac Watts. He dies! the Friend of sinners dies 165 |
