Herbert, George, a noted English poet and devotedly pious clergyman of the Church of England, was born at Montgomery Castle, Wales, April 3, 1593; was graduated at Trinity College, Cambridge; was a pastor at Layton Ecclesia, in 1626, and at Bemerton from 1630 to his death, in 1632. He occupied his moments of leisure in the cultivation of sacred music.
