The Model Prayer5And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say to youp, They have their reward. 6But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which sees in secret shall reward you openly. 7But when youp pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. meaningless 8Be not youp therefore like to them: for yourp Father knows what things youp have need of, before youp ask Him. 9After this manner therefore pray youp: Our Father which is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. honored, sacred 10Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14For if youp forgive men their trespasses, yourp heavenly Father will also forgive youp: 15But if youp forgive not men their trespasses, neither will yourp Father forgive yourp trespasses. Fasting to Be Seen Only by God16Moreover when youp fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Verily I say to youp, They have their reward. 17But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; 18That you appear not to men to fast, but to your Father which is in secret: and your Father, which sees in secret, shall reward you openly. Lay Up Treasures in Heaven19Lay not up for yourselvesp treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20But lay up for yourselvesp treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21For where yourp treasure is, there will yourp heart be also. The Lamp of the Body22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be single, your whole body shall be full of light. whole, healthy 23But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you be darkness, how great is that darkness! diseased You Cannot Serve God and Riches24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Youp cannot serve God and mammon. worldly riches Do Not Worry25Therefore I say to youp, Take no thought for yourp life, what youp shall eat, or what youp shall drink; nor yet for yourp body, what youp shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? do not worry; food; clothing 26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet yourp heavenly Father feeds them. Are youp not much better than they? birds; more valuable 27Which of youp by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature? worrying; height 28And why take youp thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: are you concerned about 29And yet I say to youp, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. clothed 30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall He not much more clothe youp, O youp of little faith? 31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for yourp heavenly Father knows that youp have need of all these things. 33But seek youp first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to youp. 1 CHRON 16:11 34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
