Woe to the Scribes and Pharisees

Then spoke Jesus to the multitude, and to His disciples,

Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

All therefore whatsoever they bid youp observe, that observe and do; but do not youp after their works: for they say, and do not.   what they do

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,   boxes with Old Testament scriptures

And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.   teacher

But be not youp called Rabbi: for One is yourp Master, even Christ; and all youp are brethren.

And call no man yourp father upon the earth: for One is yourp Father, which is in heaven.

Neither be youp called masters: for One is yourp Master, even Christ.   authoritative teachers or infallible guides

But he that is greatest among youp shall be yourp servant.

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.   humbled

But woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for youp neither go in yourselvesp, neither allow youp them that are entering to go in.

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore youp shall receive the greater damnation.   condemnation

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, youp make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselvesp.   travel all over; follower

Woe to youp, youp blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!   obligated

Youp fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

Youp fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon.

And whoso shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by Him that dwells therein.

And he that shall swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by Him that sits thereon.

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought youp to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Youp blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.   filter out

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for youp are like to whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.   similar; tombs

Even so youp also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within youp are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.   law-abiding

Woe to youp, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because youp build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchers of the righteous,   adorn

And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.   lived; ancestors; murder

Wherefore youp be witnesses to yourselvesp, that youp are the children of them which killed the prophets.

Fill youp up then the measure of yourp fathers.

Youp serpents, youp generation of vipers, how can youp escape the damnation of hell?

Wherefore, behold, I send to youp prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them youp shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall youp scourge in yourp synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:   2 CHRON 36:16

That upon youp may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachias, whom youp slew between the temple and the altar.   GEN 4:8

Verily I say to youp, All these things shall come upon this generation.   truly

Jesus Laments over Jerusalem

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and youp would not!

Behold, yourp house is left to youp desolate.   PSA 69:25; JER 22:5 | empty

For I say to youp, Youp shall not see Me hereafter, till youp shall say, Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.   PS 118:26
